City & Guilds 6156 Streetworks Excavation and Reinstatement for Operatives and Supervisors

New regulatory requirements now require that any contractor carrying out works in the roads / highway must have at least one qualified operative on site and at least one qualified supervisor to monitor that site.



Which qualification is right for me?

Here at Davem Training we are able offer training for both operatives and supervisors.
There are 16 units of competence: 9 units for operatives (marked 'O' below) and 8 units for supervisors (marked 'S'). These units are as follows:

  • 01 Location and avoidance of underground apparatus (O & S)
  • 02 Signing, lighting and guarding (O)
  • 03 Excavation in the highway (O)
  • 04 Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials (O)
  • 05 Reinstatement of sub-base and roadbase in no-bituminous materials (O)
  • 06 Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials (O)
  • 07 Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials (O)
  • 08 Reinstatement of concrete slabs (O)
  • 09 Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (O)
  • 10 Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding (S)
  • 11 Monitoring excavation in the highway (S)
  • 12 Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials (S)
  • 13 Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and roadbase in non-bituminous materials (S)
  • 14 Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials (S)
  • 15 Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs (S)
  • 16 Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (S)

A separate certificate is issued for each unit. Various combinations of Street Works units will lead to a full Street Works award for which an identity card will be issued, by the Street Works Qualifications Register, proving your new status.


There are 12 full qualifications (6 for operatives and 6 for supervisors), listed below, together with the units required for each:


Qualifications for Operatives

  • O1 Excavation in the highway (Units 01, 02 & 03)
  • O2 Excavation, backfilling and reinstatement of construction layers with a cold-lay bituminous surface (Units 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 & 06)
  • O3 Reinstatement of construction layers in hot-lay and cold-lay bituminous material (Units 01, 02, 06 & 07)
  • O4 Reinstatement of concrete slabs (Units 01, 02 & 08)
  • O5 Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 01, 02 & 09)
  • O6 Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Unit 02)

Qualifications for Supervisors

  • S1 Monitoring excavation in the highway (Units 01, 10 & 11)
  • S2 Monitoring excavation, backfilling and reinstatement of construction layers with bituminous materials (Units 01, 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14)
  • S3 Monitoring reinstatement of construction layers in bituminous materials (Units 01, 10 & 14)
  • S4 Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs (Units 01, 10 & 15)
  • S5 Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways (Units 01, 10 & 16)
  • S6 Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Unit 010)

How will I be assessed?

The qualifications are assessed by observation. One of our qualified assessors will observe you while you are working in a simulated environment to ensure you can do the work properly. The assessor will also ask you questions either orally or written.

Are there any entry requirements?

You don't need to have any qualifications to be able to take the streetworks awards.

What if I have learning difficulties?

Not a problem. Just let one of our advisors know when you are booking the course and arrangements will be made to ensure you are able to successfully complete the training.

How long will the course take?

This will depend on the number of units you are taking, however an average qualification of 6 units will take approximately 4 days.

Where will the course take place?

The course will be run from our state of the art training centre in Pyle, Bridgend, South Wales.
